There and back... an overnight trip to the beach

Whew! Can't believe how much was packed into a quick overnight weekend camping trip. It was fun, humbling, and exhausting.

We decided to take the kids camping once before the weather gets too hot, and we were delighted to discover a nice beach and campgrounds a bit over an hour away. So, we packed up almost as much as we could cram into the CRV and set out early.

Saturday at the beach was a blast. Jonathan flew a kite for the first time and couldn't have been more delighted, and Abby was tickled pink to play in the sand. That night, strong winds made for lots of noise, a shaking tent, and two kids who both insisted they really couldn't sleep unless tucked under Mommy's arms. Suffice it to say David ended up sleeping in a Lightening McQueen sleeping bag while I nodded off for 2 minutes at a time with the munchkins "snuggled" close. Thank Goodness we got in a nice, long naptime at home the next day! I suspect our next trip to the beach will be a day trip, and it may be a while before we pack two small kids into a tent again. We had some fun times, though, and got some great pics!

As soon as we arrived, we hit the beach. Abigail couldn't get enough of playing in the sand, while Jonathan, pail and shovel in hand, set to work building sand castles with his Daddy.
Then back to the campsite for a picnic lunch. After lunch, we got to setting up camp.
Abby hung out in the Pack N Play,

while we put her brother to work. ;) Someone was VERY eager to use a hammer!
Abby supervised the interior decorating once the tent was in place.
Jonathan picked up the brush and dust pan and went to work!

"Look, Mommy! I'm helping!"
After a failed attempt at naptime, we headed back to the beach.

"Daddy, can you help me build my kite?"

"Great, while you work on that, I'm going to work on this sand over here."
Jonathan was delighted beyond words with his kite. I think he was wide-eyed open-mouthed the entire time it flew.
Kite flying with Daddy.
And when it fell, he was eager to help me retrieve it and throw it back up.
SOOO excited to hold the kite string with Daddy.
Later, the guys took a little walk along the beach and waded in the water.
While Abby spent some quality time in the sand.

Water gun fight!
Abby got in some quality time with Daddy, too!
Ready to eat again! And now, Jonathan's favorite part of the trip. He could not BELIEVE we let him stay up after dark and eat s'mores! "This is my night-time sandwich, Mommy! I like my night-time sandwich! It's sooo yummy!"
